How to Add Network Locations to Windows 7 Libraries

Personally I am a big fan of the library feature in Windows 7. It brings lots of productivity improvements and allows you to quickly access your important files and folders.

However, there’s one thing missing: Windows 7 won’t allow you to include in a library a location which is not indexed, like a shared network folder.

Fortunately, the guys from Zorn Software have developed a small tool, called Win7 Library Tool, which allows you to do just that: include non-indexed locations in Windows 7 libraries. Let’s see how you do this.

First, download and install the Win7 Library Tool. When done, start the application. If you want to modify one of your existing libraries, click on the button from the bottom left-side side of the application window.

Now you have all your current libraries loaded. In case you want to create a new one, click on the ‘Create a New Library’ button, highlighted below.

Now type the name of the new library and click on Create.

Next, select the newly created library and click on the ‘Edit properties’ button highlighted below.

In the Edit Library window you can edit several parameters. First, you can choose an icon for the library. It can be any of the standard ones or a custom one.

Next, you can choose the library type. This is useful to set because it will adjust the Windows Explorer view settings according to the content type.

So, if you have library of pictures, it will show its contents using the icons view. Then, it is time to select the folders that will be included in the library. Click on the ‘Include a folder‘ button.

Browse to the folder you want to include and select it. As I said in the beginning, you can also select shared folders from another computer on your network.

Once you edited the properties of the newly created library, click on the Apply button.

You will now receive several notification messages. The first one will say that your existing libraries will be deleted. Don’t worry, they won’t disappear. Your data will not be affected in any way, and all your present libraries will be restored once the process ends. So, click on Proceed and don’t be scared.

If you now open Windows Explorer, you will see all the newly created libraries and you can start working with them. Even if you will decide to uninstall the tool, the libraries will continue to show up until you delete them yourself.

If you have other good tips about Windows 7 libraries, don’t hesitate to share them.
