From CD to MP3 with Accord CD Ripper Free

When it comes to getting your collection of CD music to digital format, a few names comes to mind.  Apple’s iTunes, Microsoft’s Windows Media Player, and Easy CD-DA Extractor are a sample of the more widely distributed CD ripping software.  Some applications of this nature have a MP3 conversion function, blended in with a host of other functions.  At times though, you may want software that has a simple approach to this type of operation.

Accord CD Ripper Free (found here) offers up a straightforward rip to MP3 utility that is easy to operate, free to use, and compatible with the latest versions of Windows.  While the default settings can satisfy the average audiophile, there are extra options, such as adjusting the sampling frequency and bit rate, for those with more particular digital tastes.

Though there are upgraded versions of Accord CD Ripper available for purchase (if one desired a larger number of digital audio file output formats, for example; the free version covers only WAV and MP3), the free distribution will be the focus here.

Looking over the main interface of Accord CD Ripper Free, you will notice the large icons towards the top of the graphical view.  Hovering your mouse pointer over any of the icons will produce a tan colored message of the icon’s function.

You may also notice that a default disc drive has already been selected (though you can easily change that should you have more than one disc drive).  Additionally, a set of round blue buttons, closer to the center, are the controls for a basic built-in CD player.

After a few minutes of looking over the controls, you will probably be ready to rip some CD tracks to MP3 format files. First, we need to choose a disc drive.  If you only have one, you are done with the first step.  Should your Windows computer be equipped with additional disc drives, you can select the other drives from either the File menu, of the drives drop down selection box.

At this point, we can click on the CD disc icon and proceed to rip all the tracks on your music CD with the default settings.  This is the simple two-step process, and you now have your MP3 files at this point in time.  However, if you want to edit any of the music information, or other optional settings, please read on.

If you want to get into the Options area, click on the screwdriver and wrench icon.  This section is where you may change the location and file name format of the created audio files and additional MP3 format data.  To change the output data, for instance, click on Output from within the Options screen.

From this window, you can see exactly where and how your MP3 files will be exported.  The Filename Style selection is another drop down menu with pre-built choices.  Instead of having to manually change this field, you can quickly choose from a variety of formats.

The Filename Preview text box will change to reflect your choices in the Filename Style menu.  You may also change the Destination Directory, should you need your MP3 output to go somewhere else other than your My Music folder.

For those of us who like to change settings to our liking, or just to experiment, click on the MP3 text entry to view the MP3 file settings.  Here we have three options that can be reshuffled in many different ways.  This is one area that may need changed if your initial MP3 file batch does not sounds that way you want.

Should you be content with the selected options, let’s go back and fire off some MP3 tracks.  Keep in mind that you do not have to choose all the songs on CD for transfer.  The left-hand side of the tracks list has checkboxes where you may deselect any songs you do not want converted.

Now that you have your selections ready to be ripped, just click on the CD icon and wait a few minutes for the run to complete.  After starting the ripping process, you have a display showing you the progress of your music tracks.  If you have to stop the batch for whatever reason, you can Pause or Cancel it from this window.

When all of the selected songs are done processing, you can navigate your way to the destination folder to view your newly created MP3 songs.  These files are ready to be brought into the digital audio application, or MP3 player, of your choosing.

Though the Accord CD Ripper Free program lacks the visual polish that other utilities have, it makes up for the lack of eye candy with speed and simplicity.  While this may not be the final choice in the realm of CD ripping programs, this is a good one to get someone started if they need to create MP3 files from a music compact disc.
